Local tennis player Olivia Mania will be heading to the Big Apple after winning the 2007 Arthur Ashe Essay Contest sponsored by the United States Tennis Association National Junior Tennis League. 

Contestants had to answer in 300 words or less, “Why is Arthur Ashe a legend?”  

Arthur Ashe was an exceptional tennis player and humanitarian that dedicated his life to providing less fortunate children the opportunity to play tennis in hopes of abolishing the barriers of race and poverty.  The USTA/NJTL was founded in 1969 in part by Arthur Ashe and is a national network of community tennis organizations focused on fostering character education through the sport of tennis.  The organization upholds the ideals of Ashe such as instilling the importance of good sportsmanship and academic excellence. 

The all-expense paid trip to New York will include attendance at the Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, a nationally televised event honoring Ashe’s desire to expose tennis to all children, a tour of New York City, and going to the U.S. Open.  The essay contest is open to children ages 6 to 18 participating in a USTA/NJTL sponsored program such as the one at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.  For more information on how to become involved in the local USTA/NJTL, please contact the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center at 919-872-4128.
