Local track athlete Jacy VanArkle came in first place in the 8-9 year old girls’ division at the National 2007 U.S. Junior Olympic Skills Competition in Colorado Springs, Colo., last week. The national finals of the 2007 U.S. Jr. Olympic Skills Competition hosted 72 young athletes competing for national titles. As the official youth skills competition of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), the U.S. Jr. Olympic Skills competition focuses on four fundamental sports: basketball, soccer, tennis and track & field.
From Aug. 9-11, athletes ages 8-13 converged at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for the opportunity to be crowned champions of their sport. Each athlete qualified to compete by winning their age and gender category at one of 6,300 local qualifying events, followed by another victory at one of 150 regional events across the country. This year’s 72 national finalists were the top athletes selected from more than 1.7 million participants.
Jacy qualified for the event in Raleigh with the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department at Buffaloe Road Athletic Park back in April. “We are extremely excited and proud of Jacy’s accomplishment,” says Jane Bailey, City of Raleigh, Parks and Recreation Athletic Director. “She worked hard to reach her goal.”
