Niemann, Bullpen Shutout Tides

Published Jul 26, 2007

Durham, NC – RHP Jeff Niemann (11-5) held the Tides scoreless and RBIs from Jeremy Owens, Jason Pridie, and Jorge Cantu were all the Bulls needed as they shutout Norfolk 3-0, on Wednesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The Bulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with RBI-singles from Owens and Pridie, and Cantu extended the lead with his first home run of the season in the sixth inning.  All three runs came off LHP Kurt Birkins (6-4), who allowed the runs on 10 hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Niemann worked six innings (facing two batters in the seventh inning) and surrendered just five hits and a walk while striking out four.  LHP Jon Switzer pitched a scoreless seventh inning, RHP Seth McClung retired the side in the eighth inning, and RHP Chad Orvella earned his 14th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Bulls and Tides will meet again on Thursday night at 7 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.  For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
