NC State Professor Available to Discuss Rev. Jerry Falwell’s Legacy

Published May 29, 2007

The death of Rev. Jerry Falwell marks the passing of a galvanizing religious and political figure who was instrumental in mobilizing and engaging evangelical Christians in the political process, while at the same time alienating others who did not share his religious or political beliefs.

Dr. Jason Bivins, associate professor of philosophy and religion at North Carolina State University and an expert in the intersection of religion and politics in America, says Falwell’s death leaves a void, at least a symbolic one, because he is so clearly associated with the Christian Right’s recent ascendancy and political impact. But Bivins says the Christian Right still has a stable institutional base, solid financial backing and a younger generation of leaders to carry the torch.

Bivins is available to discuss Falwell’s legacy, his willingness to address hot-button political issues, his ability to mobilize voters and broader issues of religion and politics in America. Bivins can be reached by e-mail at jcbivins@unity.ncsu.edu.
