A parade to commemorate fallen firefighters will be held on Saturday, May 3 beginning at 10 a.m. The parade is being sponsored by the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
The parade route will start on Hillsborough Street just west of downtown and proceed east on Dawson Street to Nash Square. The parade units will park on the streets surrounding Nash Square. The parade will end about noon and will be followed by a 1 p.m. memorial service in Nash Square to honor North Carolina firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2007. Nash Square is the home of the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial. Dedicated in 2006, the bronze memorial honors firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The entire route for the May 3 parade will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. until the parade ends around noon. Detours will be posted to guide motorists around the parade. Parking spaces adjacent to Nash Square and one travel lane in the 200 blocks of South Dawson, West Martin and South McDowell streets will be closed throughout the event, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, the 200 block of West Hargett Street adjacent to Nash Square and the northernmost travel lane of the 300 block of West Hargett Street will be closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
