The idea of spring cleaning may bring a picture to your mind of your grandmother beating her rugs, washing all the bedding in the house and scrubbing her windows until they sparkled.    These days though most people barely have the time to glance out their windows let alone think about setting aside time to wash them.
With the warm weather finally staying with us and all the flowers and trees blooming and budding, I’m offering you seven tips to help you bring the freshness of spring into your home.

  1. Clean out your closet by putting away winter clothes and bringing out your spring and summer clothes.   Don’t forget to wash or dry clean the winter items so you don’t put them away with spots on them.   As you are going through your clothes, this is a great time to pick out the ones you didn’t wear all season and really don’t like, and donate them.
  2. Put away your winter coats, hats, gloves and boots until next year.  If you keep these in the same closet all year round then all you’ll have to do is just wash items that need it and pack the gloves and hats in clear plastic containers or baskets that are labeled.  Everything will be ready when the fall weather turns chilly.
  3. Vacuum the whole house and open the windows to air out the rooms and get rid of that stale smell.   Dust before you vacuum to make sure you are cleaning everything.   You might want to wait a little while until the pollen isn’t quite as bad.   Opening your windows now will mean you’ll be very busy dusting every surface in your home and trying to remove that fine, yellow pollen.
  4. Go through those paper piles that have built up over the winter.   Do you still have your holiday catalogs scattered around?   Recycle the newspapers, catalogs and magazines that you’ve had for awhile and just haven’t found the time to read.  Remember while you are saving those old magazines and newspapers, new magazines and newspapers are still steadily streaming into your home.   Don’t get stuck reading “old” news because you saw some interesting article six months ago.  Let it go!
  5. Clean off your desktop either in your home office or the one in the kitchen that serves as a catch all for the paperwork and stuff that piles up in our homes.  You don’t have to do it all at once.   Set aside just 30 minutes a day to tackle just one section each time.   As you work, make those decisions that you’ve been postponing.  Set up the files you need so as paperwork continues to come in you have a place for it.
  6. Clean out the garage and sweep all the leaves and dirt out.  If you have items that you are no longer using, you can get them in a pile, load up your car and drive to your favorite charity.   Don’t let stuff clutter up your life because you are saving it “just in case.”  Once you get the garage cleaned plan on washing and cleaning out the cars too.
  7. Plan a date on your calendar to clean out your refrigerator and freezer.    Take everything out and wipe it clean.  You just never know what you’ll find in the back of the refrigerator.   As you put items back, it’s a great time to make a quick inventory of what you use on a regular basis.  You can create an inventory sheet and post it on the fridge.   When you run out of an item you can quickly check it off your list and you’ll be ready next time you go to the store.   When you are done cleaning, have the first cookout of the season to celebrate spring.
