Whether you realize it or not, the disorganization and clutter in your life has a huge impact on you, both physically and mentally. Clutter is very emotional and psychological.
At your job, being disorganized can lead to:
- Appearing unprofessional because you are always late and don’t complete projects that are due in a timely manner, whether working in a team or by yourself.
- Physical stress on your body showing up as higher blood pressure and a higher heart rate as well as ulcers and other chronic conditions.
- A decreased immune system unable to fight off cold germs, flues, and viruses.
- Increased stress which puts your body in the “fight or flight” mode unable to relax.
Clutter in your home can lead to:
- Depression when you get so involved in your “stuff” that it literally will take over your whole life. Instead of you owning your stuff, your stuff owns you.
- Isolation because you suffer from C.H.A.O.S. – “can’t have anyone over syndrome.” You never invite anyone over to your home because of the condition it is in. You are embarrassed and ashamed of how things have gotten out of control.
- Increase in weight. Do you have three sets of clothes in your closet? The ones that fit, the ones that were from a lower weight and the larger size that you do not want to grow back into again. Every time you open your closet you give yourself a guilt trip.
- Improper nutrition. If all the counters in your kitchen are covered with papers, books, unused appliances, mail, magazines and bills, you hardly feel inspired to cook a nutritious meal for your family. That’s when you call for fast food to be delivered and then you start adding on more weight.
- Allergies can really give you a hard time because of the dust that collects on unused items around the home. Bugs and other nasty pests can also start to invade your space when there is too much clutter around.
- Less energy – people say they feel suffocated by their clutter, or they can’t breathe or they are weighed down by all the stuff they have to take care of. Owning a lot of “stuff” demands your time, money, space and energy. You spend a lot of money buying all those things and then you get them home and have to spend a lot of time maintaining, cleaning, and repairing them.
How do you feel when you come into your home or office? Clutter does promote a certain “feeling.” If you have any of the symptoms listed above, look around you and see if you are suffering from clutter and disorganization. You can start to change your situation, slowly but surely. In my experience, after seeing some of the homes and offices I’ve been in, we have way too much stuff and most of us don’t even realize it.
It is up to you to decide what type of lifestyle and environment you want.
You don’t have to join the minimalists or the simplicity movement. Develop a balanced lifestyle you can live with. You have to decide what is important to you and then organize those items so you can find them when you need them, enjoy them by using them, displaying them, and filling your life with the things you love. That doesn’t necessarily mean stuff. It can mean enjoying your family and friends and filling your life with memories and moments.
