You can have the pleasure of living in a well-organized home, but don’t expect it to happen in just a few hours or overnight. When planning your organizing project, break it down into small manageable goals that are easily achieved. While the big picture goal may be to declutter your entire kitchen, start with a little objective of just cleaning out the junk drawer.
Setting up a schedule to work on your project a short amount of time each and every day, will give you the successful feeling you need to continue it. Here are some quick tips that only require 20 minutes of your time to complete.
1. Make a plan. You need a goal so you know where you are going and then your plan will help you get there. Make a list of what you need to do to arrange your room and then gather all the supplies you need to complete the job (trash bags, boxes, and don’t forget the timer). You only want to spend 20 minutes on the work.
2. Begin with the hot spot in your kitchen, which in most cases is the island. This area is usually heaped high with paper piles, books, magazines, etc. You want to deal with the relevant day-to-day papers and items that keep you functioning efficiently. You can save the out-of-sight items for later. A clean surface on your kitchen island will make you feel better immediately.
3. Unclutter your refrigerator door. Unless you have a new stainless steel fridge which doesn’t hold magnets, you probably have quite a few “things” on your refrigerator door. In some homes it is hard to see the refrigerator for the photos, artwork and papers covering it. Set up a box, basket, or large envelope for your children’s artwork. Remove all the sticky notes with phone numbers scribbled on them and put the information in a notebook you can keep near the phone. If you have lots of photos on the door, pick out 3 or 4 favorites and remove the rest.
4. Store items where you use them. If you use the desk in your kitchen to pay your bills and do your correspondence, then be sure that is where all your tools are located. Setting up a “tool box” where you are working will cut down on the distraction of looking for things before you can begin your work. The checkbook, envelopes, stamps and pens should all be within easy reach.
5. Create an emergency center where anyone in the family can find crucial health information such as CPR or basic first aid instructions. Plus this place should have all the numbers anyone would need to call for help or reach other family members.
6. Start a donation or give away box. Set up a box in the kitchen, laundry room or even a special place in the garage where anyone in the family can put unwanted or unused items for donation. This can include clothing, toys, books, or other items. As soon as you’ve filled up the box, put it in your car and take it to your favorite charity.
