Consider a great nutritional supplement that can help you lose weight and is good for your cholesterol too.
Chitosan is a non-digestible dietary fiber that comes from chitin, a combination of a sugar and a protein that comes from the shells of shellfish. When it is in the stomach, Chitosan works by attracting and binding to fatty acids that are also in the stomach. Research indicates that Chitosan has the ability to absorb up to 4-6 times its weight in fat (including cholesterol) and prevent that fat from being absorbed into the body. This means that for every gram of Chitosan consumed, it could prevent the absorption of about 4-6 grams of fat.
Although it helps block the number of calories the body gets from fat in the diet, it is not best to use only Chitosan in weight loss efforts. Studies done on Chitosan and weight loss indicate that Chitosan is most effective in promoting weight loss when used with a low calorie and reduced fat diet. Combining Chitosan with supplements of protein and additional fiber can promote weight loss, and help keep the sensation of fullness.
In addition to weight loss, Chitosan also has benefits for reducing bad cholesterol. A recent study had participants taking 2,400 mg of Chitosan daily, and reported a significant decrease in LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol) compared with placebo subjects. Although this study did not report any changes in total cholesterol, the results for reducing LDL cholesterol were encouraging, and the study should lead to more research.
Chitosan works best when it is in the stomach at the same time as the fat, so it is usually recommended to take Chitosan supplements about a half hour before the meal or meals that contain the most fat – often lunch and dinner.
