Kids entering the new school year have a lot on their minds. New books to bring home, new teachers to meet, new friends to make. One of the last things they want to deal with is acne. Well, you can tell them: there’s good news. Getting proper nutrition can go a long way toward having healthy skin.

Acne is generally caused by skin cells becoming stuck in pores and plugging up the escape route of the natural oil “sebum.” Then a bacteria discovers the kind of environment it likes best, and when the bacteria grows, the inflammation and irritation that result begin to show as redness and acne.

Proper nutrition to prevent acne starts off with getting a multivitamin and antioxidant formula. The vitamins that are important for healthy skin are generally the vitamins that we are most likely to be deficient in, such as zinc, vitamin A, and the essential oils Omega-3 and Omega-6.

The increase of hormones at puberty requires more Zinc, making teens more likely to be Zinc deficient at this time. In fact, several studies have reported that teen boys have low Zinc levels. Second, Zinc is necessary for skin to heal, and it works to clear skin by taming oil production.

Vitamin A, which can also be found in both multivitamin and antioxidant formulas, is an important nutrient for skin because too little vitamin A in the diet can show up as dry, flaky skin and/or scalp
